WARNING: THIS ARTICLE WILL BE OFFENSIVE TO DIEHARD, MINDLESS, STUPID,
NON-THINKING FANS OF DR. LAURA SCHLESCHINGER
I used to be a die-hard fan of Dr. Laura. I felt and still feel that she gives
some good advice. Her books are informative, relavent, interesting, and well
written. She has a lot of wisdom to impart that could help people avoid a
lot of pit-falls in life.
She should have a lot of wisdom, considering that she was so stupid and greedy
when she was young that I'm sure she learned the hard way.
Some of the people that call the show really are idiots and deserve to be
blasted. She is good at arguing moral and philosophical points. Her message is
timeless and knows no boundary. Too bad that most of her fans are too stupid to realize that this woman is also
a sham and should NOT be judging anybody considering how she got started in the radio business.
I am not perfect. I have never claimed to be perfect. No one I know is perfect.
When people come to ME for advice, I answer with compassion most of the time. I try hard to keep from coming off on them. I try to keep an open mind and
am willing to admit when I am wrong.
However, I am not in the radio biz, where a good way to get ratings, should we
follow Dr. Laura, is to be rude, narrowminded and abrasive. We should call women
bitches and never listen closely to our callers. We should claim that we are NOT in the busines
of making life decisions when we know damn well that is exactly why people call us
in the first place. We should never give our callers a chance to really speak and
NEVER allow anyone on the air who can strongly argue a point that is against what
we proport to believe. And we should act as if we are the pinnacle of morality when
we know that we got our break in the media by being the slut-kitten of an influential
disc jockey.
I am ticked off because I actually believed that this woman was on the up and up.
I had actually started using her philosophy as a way to conduct my life. Then something
happened that was a precursor to the media fiasco that turned me off for good: I met
her.
I stood in line with the rest of the crowd. As luck would have it, I ended up behind a
woman who had a bulky light yellow envelope. The lady stuck up a conversation with me (I
don't know why) and told me that she knew Dr. Laura. "Really, that GREAT!" I chimed.
"Yeah," she said, "I've known Laura ever since she was a child." "I'm surprised you're
standing in line with the rest of us if you know her," I replied. "Oh, that's because I
haven't seen Laura in over ten years. She really doesn't call home much, you know. She
hasn't talked to her mother in YEARS. I just came across these old photos when I
was cleaning up and wondered if she'd like to have them." I asked if I could see, them,
totally expecting a "hell no", but was given the pictures with no problem. (I guess I
have one of those faces that says "trust me, I won't jack you"). There was nothing
spectacular, just some old pictures of her parents and other typical family shots
that really are not that memorable. Yet I did find it odd that a lady whose radio
persona is so pro-family would not speak to her mother, no matter how bad her mother may be.
She seemed okay when I got to her desk. I had just listened to a radio broadcast where
she talked about how she never travelled far from home without her family.
She made some small talk while signing my book, asking me about my interests, etc., nothing
major. Then I noticed that neither her husband or her son were with her, so I casually
asked "Oh where is your son, Deryk?". "Oh, he's at the hotel room," she answered. But
something came over me: I had the feeling that she was lying. Don't ask me why, but
I did. I don't know if it was the way she said it or anything, but some part of me knew
that she was lying. I couldn' believe it: Dr. Laura was feeding a line to a fan, but why?
Then I started hearing little bits and pieces from different sources: I heard that
Howard Stern didn't like her and said she'd slept her way to the top; they were talking
bad about her on the Russ Parr show saying that she should NOT be judging people. Dr. Laura
mentioned that there was a "Dr. Lorna" parody of her, which I found
on the net. It turned out to be anything but flattering. Then I came across the Dr. Laura
Parody Pages where they compared her to Russ Limbaugh. Friends of mine whose opinion I
respect said she seemed like she gave a good show but that she was so hard on her callers
that they wondered if she was lashing out at them because she felt bad about herself. A
co-worker who has a background in Psychology talked about how he felt her abrasive
style could be damaging to some more fragile personalities.
This all started me to thinking a couple of things: one, this lady is a sham, and two,
she can talk the talk but hasn't always walked the walk.
Of course, the 12 naked pictures that got put out on the internet, well THAT was the
final blow for me!
I did some snooping around the net because I wanted to see the pictures, not to get
a cheap thrill, mind you, but because I wanted to see if it was HER. I'd heard she'd
denied it was so. A couple of days later, I found them, looked at them and concluded
that yes, it WAS her. I'm good with faces--bad with names, but good with faces. Since
I figured I would have thought that the young thing in those pictures was her daughter
I knew it had to be her. Looked like the same height, same eyes, same cheekbones, same
complexion, same body type, and the same teeth. Yes, I checked out the TEETH. Her teeth
are a little bit like Mr. Ed's.
That was it. I vowed never to take Dr. Laura seriously again. Not just because she
wasn't PERFECT but because I think she has NO right to be as cruel and self-righteous as
she is considering what she has done. Granted, NO one has the right to treat their
callers the way that she does. Now if she came off with the attitude of "Hey, I'm just
trying to help you--we all make mistakes" should the pictures have come out, then I
I would have been surprised, but not turned off.
I think that it was a bit trifling for her old mentor/lover/dildo to fling her nude
body across the internet. However, I know why he did it (although I would NEVER do
that to anybody, I'm not big on betraying people); he wanted to give her some HUMILITY.
She'd snubbed him, hurt him,
so he wanted to hurt her back. He also may be one of those guys that always has to one-up
a woman. That is why so many people were glad when the pictures came out: here is this
lady who has been making a fortune by basically making people feel bad and har-har-har,
look at her, she was no better than the people that call her show. It's a classic case
of how pride always comes before a fall.
But that won't stop the die-hard Dr. Laura fans. They are so pressed for a heroine they will
totally rationalize the reality that she is pimping morality for a buck. She has a
cultic following who will diefy her and get their sado-masochistic thrills by listening
to her and taking her words as gospel. Where I have made the decision to view her
show for what it really is--ENTERTAINMENT--they will see it as the Way, the Truth, and
the Light. And quite frankly, if they are too stupid to bankrupt this woman by not
buying her products or at the very least make it impossible for her to make more money, then
hey, they deserve to get pimped.
I wrote this commentary to let the world know that there is a least one person out there
who has listened to that woman, bought a couple of her books, and yet, knows when it is
time to throw her garbage away. There is at least one listener of the Dr. Laura show that
knows it's just a sham and uses it as background noise when driving. She will not get
another dime out of me.
And I pity her son Deryk. I bet there are jerks at school who are itching to torment him
about his naked mama on the web and in Hustler magazine. If not now, then wait until he
hits high school or college. I think it may get hard after a while for her son to
totally take her seriously when he realizes that she whored her way into radio.
Then again that fact has not stopped the rest of her fans.
